The United States Geological Service (USGS) based on analyzes of 2017 satellite images, estimated that 82% of the annual production of 330,000 carats is smuggled out of the country, or about all of the annual production of previous years estimated to 350,000. carats/year.

A study funded by UNDP and UNICEF in 2018 confirmed this trend with an estimate of smuggling  between 77% and 86% of current diamond production.

According to a recent study by IPIS and reported by USAID and other NGOs, gold production was estimated at 5.7 tons in 2019, of which only about 10% was channeled to the tax department. We firmly believe that this gap is due to non-compliance by all actors in the upstream and downstream value chain, with all the rules that make it possible to fight against informal trade.

Science has established that people who are well informed and trained are the ones able to break the cycle of poverty, inequality or violence suffered. Mining education is the key element to overcome poverty and inequalities in mining communities.

What does our Mining Education Program aim to change and accomplish in the artisanal small-scale mining community to fight against poverty and inequalities?

We devote our resources to educating the rights of artisanal miners according to the 2063 African mining vision, in order to allow them decent work, fair incomes, a dignified life and living conditions allowing them to project the future with certainty.

By implementing our mining education program, artisanal miners will have the opportunity to obtain quality training and coaching on:

  • Knowledge and respect of the local mining code and international regulations

  • Knowledge of mining rights

  • Raising awareness on formal labor and reduced impact mining

  • Become well-informed citizens contributing to the development of their country

  • Bar the way against trafficking and smuggling of minerals in order to channel resources to the State

  • Benefit from a communication platform that allows them to receive mining news in real time.

We have a unique compliance process and wealth creation for the informal mining sector combining education, management system, exploitation, traceability, regulation, exports, value chain, rehabilitation of mining sites, monitoring and evaluation. At the start of its implementation, this system is able to intercept more than 60% of gold not captured by the State and create add value for investors and budgetary space for the financing of the country's development programs.

What interest for a country to set up its traceability system?

A traceability system is a series of interrelated factors associated, with traceable documents and whose quality is controlled by a set of special inspections or audits.

Any element moving from part of the system or chain to another must be identified with a code or an identification number, and all movement into or out of a part of the chain is stored by using the identification number of the element.

In the case of diamonds for example, each diamond should be identified clearly and unambiguously and, when it moves along the export chain, its code or ID must be registered in each stage to prove his passage.

An upstream check should be able to find where he traveled but also check that for every step in the chain, some procedures were followed. A diamond can move from its place of extraction to a mining company and then exported to the final customer. In this case, the input and output date at each location must be recorded with the ID code of diamond.

The same procedure will be applied for all other minerals with an identifier and packaging specific to each minerals.

Backed by our expertise on mining resources and certification scheme over more than 30 years, we have created a unique fair trade minerals program FAIRSPARK that is based on the required standards and which makes it possible to certify that the ore marketed comes from a compliant area. This process can be implemented at the request of governments, investors and mineral buyers wishing to access the legal mineral market. It also allows the country that sets it up to attract foreign direct investments.
